How to review a crypto trading journal each week

By Daily Edge · Updated · Educational only, not financial advice.

Keeping a crypto trading journal only helps if you read it. A short weekly review turns a pile of notes into a few decisions for next week. This is a checklist you can run in 20–30 minutes.

Before you start

Weekly review checklist

  1. Totals: number of trades, net P&L after fees, biggest win and loss.
  2. Win rate and average win / average loss: useful together, not alone.
  3. Expectancy per trade (in $ or in R): roughly (win% × avg win) − (loss% × avg loss).
  4. Drawdown: worst peak-to-trough during the week and whether you hit a personal stop-trading rule.
  5. Group by setup: which named setups you actually traded; drop or shrink the ones with poor expectancy over a meaningful sample.
  6. Rules kept vs broken: compare results on disciplined days vs rule-break days (see trading discipline).
  7. Exits: on winners and losers, how far price went for and against you before you got out (see MFE and MAE trade review).
  8. Mood / sleep notes: any pattern worth a next-week rule (e.g. no size-ups after poor sleep).
  9. One change only: write a single process change for next week. Not five.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a weekly review take?

Keep it short enough that you will repeat it every week. A review you skip helps less than a short one you always do.

What if I had no trades this week?

Review your plans and the rules you kept. Sitting out when nothing matched your setup is part of the record.

Should I change my strategy after one bad week?

One week is a small sample. Look for repeated mistakes first, and judge the strategy over many trades.
