How to paper trade crypto: a practical beginner checklist
By Daily Edge · Updated · Educational only, not financial advice.
Paper trading crypto means placing simulated trades against live (or delayed) prices with virtual money. It’s one of the safer ways to learn an order ticket and a routine before you risk funds. It is not a promise that real trading will feel the same.
Beginner checklist
- Pick one venue model: spot only at first, or perps later. Don’t mix five products on day one.
- Set a realistic virtual balance close to what you’d actually fund (e.g. $500–$2,000), not $100,000.
- Write three rules before the first order (max risk per trade, max trades per day, when you stop).
- Practise order types: market, limit, stop. Place and cancel until the ticket is boring.
- Risk first, size second: choose % of equity you’d lose at the stop, then derive size from stop distance.
- Log every paper trade in a journal tagged as simulated — same fields as real trades.
- Review weekly with the same honesty you’d use for real money (see journal review).
- Graduate with a rule: e.g. 50+ paper trades, positive expectancy, no rule breaks in the last 20 — then go small live.
If you add leverage later
Leverage multiplies gains, losses and fees. Liquidation can arrive faster than you expect in crypto. Read paper trading crypto with leverage before you raise leverage in a simulator.
Where simulators differ from exchanges
- Fills and slippage are often kinder than a thin order book.
- Funding, mark price and liquidation engines vary by exchange and may be simplified.
- Emotion: losing virtual money is not the same as losing real money.
In Daily Edge
Daily Edge Paper is a browser simulator with virtual money and live public prices. Free caps leverage at 5x; Pro allows higher. Closed paper trades can land in your journal tagged PAPER. Paper fills are virtual, but real ones pay fees: check what they would cost with the trading fee calculator before you go live. Nothing here is financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I paper trade?
Until you follow your plan consistently. Judge that by the number of trades taken by your rules, not by profit.
Why do paper results often look better than real ones?
A simulator has no real slippage and no real fear, so fills and decisions are easier than with real money.
Can I use leverage when paper trading?
Yes. Daily Edge Paper allows up to 5x on the free plan and 20x on Pro. Read paper trading with leverage before you use it.
Can I paper trade crypto for free?
Yes. Daily Edge Paper runs in your browser with a virtual balance and live public prices, with no account or deposit.
Is paper trading crypto worth it?
It is useful for practising your process: order types, sizing, stops and journaling. It cannot show you how real money feels, which is why paper results often look better than live ones.
